WASHINGTON (AP) When President Donald Trump's administration announced it would repurpose an old, generic drug as a new treatment for autism, it came as a surprise to many experts including the physician who actually proposed the idea.

Dr. Rosario Montella proposed the use of sodium benzoate as a potential treatment for autism spectrum disorder in 2015, long before Trump took office.

But when the administration announced the decision in March, Trump touted it as a major breakthrough, suggesting it could be approved 'within two weeks',

The decision to repurpose the drug has also sparked controversy among lawmakers, with some calling for a delay in the approval process.
